At nZEB Expo Bucharest 2026, Romania’s leading event dedicated to energy-efficient construction, Hexagon received the Excellence Award for Energy Efficiency for its residential development Someșului 15, located in Cluj-Napoca.

This distinction validates Hexagon’s long-term vision of creating residential projects that seamlessly combine comfort, sustainability, and energy performance. An innovative energy system developed by Hexagon

Someșului 15 is among the first residential developments in Romania capable of covering over 90% of its heating and cooling energy demand through renewable energy sources, thanks to an integrated energy system designed and implemented by Hexagon.

The project incorporates:

• 42 geothermal boreholes, reaching a depth of 175 meters

• Ground-source heat pumps

• A 200 kW photovoltaic system

• Battery energy storage

• Individual heat recovery ventilation units for every apartment

A high-performance building envelope, designed to exceed current energy-efficiency standards

Together, these technologies enable the use of renewable energy for both heating and cooling throughout the entire year.

During summer, excess heat is transferred back into the ground through the geothermal system, while in moderate seasons the building operates in free-cooling mode, significantly reducing energy consumption. In winter, geothermal energy powers the heat pumps, which provide heating through radiant ceiling systems, operating at highly efficient temperatures.

The result is a building that delivers superior indoor comfort, predictable operating costs, and a significant reduction in dependence on conventional energy sources.
